Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands – The Nuclear Ghost Fleet
Embark on the ultimate technical diving expedition – explore the most massive warships resting underwater, sunk during nuclear weapons testing in 1946.
The Destination: Bikini Atoll
Between 1946 and 1958, the United States conducted 23 nuclear weapons tests at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. During "Operation Crossroads," the military anchored a fleet of captured WWII battleships, aircraft carriers, and destroyers in the lagoon to test the effects of atomic blasts. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is open only to advanced technical divers, offering access to the most massive and historic warships on the ocean floor.
Signature Dive Highlights
- USS Saratoga (CV-3): An American aircraft carrier measuring 888 feet long. Rest in clear water, where you can fly over the flight deck, peer into the hangar bays, explore the bridge, and look at Helldiver planes resting on the ocean floor nearby.
- HIJMS Nagato: The legendary Japanese flagship battleship from which Admiral Yamamoto commanded the Pearl Harbor attack. Resting upside down, you can dive its massive 16-inch gun turrets and giant propellers.
- USS Apogon: A class-leader US Navy submarine resting completely intact on the sand, surrounded by black coral.
